Red Sand Beach, Maui, Hawaii

The world famous Hana Highway will take you to exotic, hard to find places on the south east side of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. Red Sand Beach is one of those secluded, hard to find and reach beaches on the island located at 20 degrees 45’09.34” N and 155 degrees 58’53.17”W. If you’re looking for a beach with easy access, this is not your beach.

Red Sand Beach is accessed by driving to the end of Uakea Road just off of Hwy 360 or the Hana Highway. Once you reach the end of the road so to speak, you’ll have to park on the side of the road, not in the condo parking lot as you could possibly get towed. Once there head to the ocean between the complex and the community center (church) on your left. You’ll follow a trail around the cliffs, some parts of the trail have been washed out, until you reach the very secluded Red Sand Beach. As you can see by the video/photo, the beach is absolutely gorgeous. The stark contrasts between the eroded red volcanic sand and the beautiful deep blue ocean with the white foam of the crashing waves are absolutely breathtaking.

Although this is one of my favorite beaches on Maui and definitely a can’t miss stop you’ll want to go into the beach knowing that there is a very distinct possibility that there could be nudists there and trust me they’re not supermodels.

The beach is somewhat protected by the jagged lava outcroppings you see in the middle of the video/picture creating a much more manageable swimming area. If you venture out past the lava outcroppings you’ll definitely be swimming in very violent surf and very much on your own.

The video of Red Sand Beach was shot on the south side of the beach on the trail headed down towards the beach itself. The video was shot in 1080i and formatted to play on a variety of media formats. This video was shot just south of Olivine Pools on the northeast side of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The Pools where very beautiful and there were a number of people swimming in the pools. The pools are basically depressions in the lava outcroppings along the shores of Maui that have been hollowed out over time and as the waves crash over the outcroppings, the ocean water fills the pools. The higher levels of the outcroppings keep the major force of the waves from smashing the swimmers to death. That doesn't mean that if you get to close to the edge, one of the violent waves won't knock you into the ocean and wash you out to sea. So enjoy at your own risk. Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park

This My Blu Horizon, video of Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park was shot from a nearby hillside just south of Grand Prismatic Spring. Grand Prismatic Spring is located in the Midway Geyser Basin along with a number of other hot springs and somewhat dormant Geysers. The spring itself is approximately 370 feet in diameter is located at 44 degrees 31’24.56 N , 110 degrees 50’23.53W and is the largest hot spring in the United States. It is also listed as the third largest hot spring in the world behind the two largest hot springs in New Zealand.

Midway Geyser Basin is accessible from Grand Loop Road by either a parking lot just to the north east or Fairy Falls Trail to the South. The hillside from where this video was shot was accessed from Fairy Falls Trail. From this vantage point you can see the vibrant brilliance of the various colors from Grand Prismatic Spring.

The colors themselves are actually algae and pigmented bacteria that thrive in the different levels of the heat in and around the spring. You’ll see the deep blues in the center fading into green on the outer edges of the spring into yellows, oranges and reds.

The water discharged from Grand Prismatic Spring is expelled at about 560 gallons per minute at a temperature of approximately 160 degrees F from the 250 x 370 foot spring. If you visit the spring early in the morning you’ll see a heavy veil of steam rising from the spring, at times literally clouding over the entire spring.

My Blu Horizon

Ka’anapali Beach is an absolutely wonderful beach. It is located on the North West coast of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The sand is exceptionally soft the sunsets are exquisite and you will not want, for resort living as resort hotels line almost the entire three mile length of Ka’anapali Beach.

No matter where you look when you research Ka’anapali Beach you’ll see a plethora of names. I like the explanation in Andrew Doughty’s book “Maui Revealed” “we’ll bow to the more common usage and designate it (Ka’anapali Beach) as the sandy beach from Black Rock south to Canoe Beach, including the section known as Dig Me Beach.”

Although it is one of the more densely populated beaches on Maui, it wasn’t overly crowded. There were numerous crowds and small throngs of beach patrons there to watch the sun set as well as about six large boats off shore, providing sunset excursions for tourists and locals alike.

The water was pretty calm and there were numerous groups of children playing in the surf. We watched as the sun set and then turned our attention towards the lighting of the Tiki torches on Black Rock, ending with the final torch being lit and the traditional dive into the ocean, symbolizing the Hawaiian’s soul moving from this life to the after life with their ancestors.

The area itself is very beautiful both the manicured beauty of the resorts and golf courses to the exotic beauty one comes to expect from a Hawaiian Beach. This area alone has just about everything you could want from the beach to the numerous restaurants, paved walkways to enjoy the walk along the beach, for those that don’t want the walk in the sand, to the romantic sunsets you travel to Hawaii to experience.

We were treated to a seal coming ashore in the evening and a couple of sea turtles graced us with their presence as well. Just about every resource you study regarding Dig Me Beach lists it as an outstanding place to snorkel. Although we did a considerable amount of snorkeling on this trip, we did not actually do any at Dig Me Beach.

Two different videos show the sun setting with sail boats silhouetted as they pass in front of the setting sun and we have the lit Tiki Torches of Black Rock as storm clouds roll in.
